After not feeling well for awhile my mother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in late June, and was being treated by Dr. Malinski. July 1st I took her for a routine visit to the Heart Failure Center run by Kara Aalfs, RN.

While being checked she went into severe A-fib. Between the fast action of Kara, Dr. Malinski, and the all the other nurses there she underwent a successful cardio version.

Fast forward to July 28th. While she was being treated with medications we went to another ‘routine’ follow up visit with Kara. While being checked she went into heart block! Again the same people did wonderful work!

Long story short she received a pacemaker on July 30th, and is doing much better.

Given the difficult nature of the problems things could not have been handled better by EVERYONE there. Even the routine visits for x-rays, blood draws, etc. have all gone smoothly.

I don’t think she would be here today if it were not for the outstanding work done by the entire staff of Sherman Hospital, Dr. Malinski, and his partners.

Thank you

As you might recall, my mother in law had been in Sherman Hospital recently – and unfortunately, passed away last week. I wanted to take a couple of minutes to let you know of the exceptional care she received by the entire staff in the Cardiac Critical Care Unit.

The staff made certain that she received whatever she wanted – and they were always concerned about us, the family, as well. Not a visit went by that we weren’t amazed by the care, kindness and compassion displayed by everyone we encountered. Because she was on a ventilator, my mother in law wasn’t able to communicate verbally – but that never stopped the countless doctors, nurses, aides, technicians, etc., from communicating with her and providing the superior service and care that we saw throughout her stay.

In addition to Dr. Choh’s nurse, Donna (what a wonderful person she is), there was one other nurse that we grew really fond of and who was really great. I don’t know what her given name is – but she goes by “KK”.

It takes someone special to do the type of work that we witnessed being done by the CCC Unit. Sherman is fortunate to have gathered so many – and we were fortunate that they were there to take care of our family member. My mother in law was at Sherman for 5 weeks – and our family will never forget the kindness and compassion – as well as the best medical care possible – that was afforded to her during that time.

I realize that I will be receiving a survey in the mail regarding my day surgery at Sherman, which I will gladly complete. However, I do feel that I have to write to you personally to emphasize how well I was treated by all – i.e. Dr. Reiff, Dr. Ward and all the nurses etc. The Day Surgery Dept. is run most efficiently without losing the personal touch. I would like you to relay this information and my heartfelt thanks to all concerned. It was a pleasure rather than an ordeal having my eye surgery. By the way, my husband, who accompanied me, was also treated very nicely and sends his thanks.

“I just had to thank you and the nursing staff… all shifts…for the care and kindness shown to my husband whenever he was admitted to 3 North. Bobbi especially was so kind and helpful on his last day… he fought a long, hard battle but knew the end was near. We had military honors for him as he served 5 years in the Air Force… I know he would have been proud of his family and the service we had for him. He is now at home in Bedford, Ohio.

Again, many thanks for everything. I miss him tremendously after almost 52 years of marriage”.

To the wonderful staff of 3 West,

I stayed for 9 days, and I can’t thank you enough for your caring and consideration while all the tests were being performed and most of all for working to solve and ease the pain! It is now under control and treatment is in full swing. I’m hoping the tumor is in full retreat. You are, to me, a most beautiful garden of caring professionals! Thank you!

I would like to take this time to thank both you and the great staff in ICU. I was admitted with pneumonia and I was scared to death. Too many times acts of greatness, kindness and compassion go unnoticed. This is why I am writing you. Your entire staff of nurses are incredible. They not only took excellent care of me, but they went above and beyond to make sure that I was taken care of physically and mentally.

They comforted me and kept me calm through one of the most trying times of my life. Marie (Briggs) and Mary (O’Kelley) and others became my friends and I owe them my life. Please make sure that these professional nurses get the praise they deserve for a job well done.

You have a great staff and thank you again.

My nephew Reed has been traveling across the country this summer with a group of college students. On Saturday, he called from Kentucky and told me he had a very swollen foot. He said his next stop would be the Sherman Family HealthCare in South Elgin.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to Viola Bressan, Registrar and greeter, Jan Lyle RN, Pam Soberano RN and Dr. Kossut. Reed was very surprised that he was expected and greeted with a warm welcome. He said everyone was friendly, the care was great and he received good discharge instructions.

Thank you all for being there to treat his condition with medication, education and compassion. His parents in Appleton have a new appreciation for Sherman and also send their heartfelt thanks.

Our mother was hospitalized on 3 North and passed away on February 14th. Our family is so grateful to the caregivers who were so attentive. The nurses, PCT’s, respiratory therapist, physical therapist, and social workers were so kind and caring. She received excellent care. Everyone we encountered took the time to answer our questions and never appeared to be too busy or rushed. We were very impressed with the wonderful care our mother received.

We especially want to acknowledge: Carmi, Jen, Rey, Siobhan, Sharon, Sheilagh, Heidi, and Bobbi on 3 North; Carol and Laura, Social Workers; Donna Allison, Nursing Supervisor; Carol, Physical Therapist; Denise, Respiratory Therapist, who was supposed to be ending her shift but stayed past her time and went out of her way to make our mother more comfortable.

No one at any time made us feel like we were interrupting them. They always made time for us and we are so grateful. We apologize for the delay in sending this letter but we were trying to gather as many of the caregiver names as possible; hopefully we have not excluded anyone.

Everyone was exceptional!

Thank you so much for all you do.

I wanted to share with you the story of someone I just spoke with.  I just got off the phone with her.  She wanted to make an appointment for her brother to attend one of our screenings.  In our conversation she mentioned that she had attended our first screening at the Bartlett facility in April.  After listening to her voice, I remembered her very well.  She was completely and utterly scared to death that we would find something wrong with her.  Unfortunately, that was the case.  One of her carotid arteries was 70% blocked.  She mentioned to Dr. Kochman that she was also having chest pains.  Because of the results of her HHM screenings, Dr. Kochman scheduled her for an EKG immediately.  The result was a coronary blockage that needed a stent immediately.  She  just kept saying our HHM screenings saved her life.  It was so wonderful to hear.  She also kept mentioning how wonderful the experience was at Sherman.  Everyone was so kind and explained exactly what was happening to her.  She could not express enough how well she was treated by the staff and Dr. Matarieh.  She said she would love to make a commercial for Sherman.  She shared her experience with her family and now her brother will be seeing us in July.

I wanted to express my sincere appreciation for the professionalism of your staff and for the most pleasant memories of my stay at Sherman Hospital on April 22, 2009 for several scary sounding elective procedures.

Second, my thanks go to the superb team of nurses at Sherman Hospital: Jean Miller (Pre-Op) for the friendly welcome; Jenny Myers (RN nurse) for confident and competent response to some detailed questions related to the sequence and timing of different procedures and for instilling additional confidence in me; Mary Brock (the scrub nurse) for all the behind the scenes assistance which I could observe only very briefly due to the knock-out capabilities of the cocktail administered by Dr. Patel.

Which brings me to the third component of the superior delivery of care at Sherman Hospital – Dr. Patel in charge of the anesthesia.  Are there any benchmarks for putting patients at ease before they go under the knife? When she declared that her job was to make sure that I wake up, the confidence of the delivery of this simple yet profound message put me instantly at ease.  And the cocktail she served! Was it real? Was it even legal? When I work up, I actually felt better than before the surgery. For the first time in a long time, I could fully and freely inhale through my nose and felt zero pain. I had expected the worst – to spit blood and breathe through the tube. Instead, an hour after moving out of the recovery room (thank you Leny for assistance there), I was ready to arm wrestle and to do push-ups? I was totally elated. Read the rest of this entry »
